A Very Green School!

What is Green Schools?

9 Flags

Blarney Street is a proud ‘Green School’ and we are proud to promote the Green Schools programme in our school, which is Ireland’s leading environmental and educational programme in Ireland. The programme itself is operated and coordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and aims to promote long-term, whole school action to help promote sustainability and the environment. The programme helps children to recognise the importance of environmental issues and encourages them to think about some of the environmental challenges we all face both in school and at home.

How does it work?

The programme focuses on 10 main themes.

These are:

  • Litter and Waste

  • Energy

  • Water

  • Travel

  • Biodiversity

  • Global Citizenship and Litter & Waste

  • Global Citizenship and Energy

  • Global Citizenship and the Marine Environment

  • Global Citizenship and Travel

  • Global Citizenship, Food and Biodiversity

Each theme runs on a two year cycle. As the programme is very much student-led, a new Green Schools committee is elected every two years to coincide with the beginning of a new theme. The committee is made of representatives from different classes and pupils are elected by their classmates. Once elected, the committee then works closely with the Green Schools Coordinator to help plan, organise, and monitor different activities in which the whole school can participate in.

In Blarney Street we are so proud of the fact that we have been awarded with a total 9 Green Flags and we are currently in the process of working towards our 10th Green Flag, which is on the theme of Global Citizenship, Food and Biodiversity. Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to help reduce our waste by ensuring that we have recycling bins in each room of our school, we have reduced the use of the number of single use plastic bottles in the school by over 50%, encouraging pupils to use reusable ones instead and have participated in numerous action days, such as the Walk for Water in Gougane Barra in 2022.

How have we done so far?

9 Green Flags and counting....

In line with our current theme, we have just recently opened Ériú, our new raised-bed garden and outdoor learning space. Ériú has allowed the children the opportunity to grow their own fruits and vegetables in school, while the outdoor learning space has proven to be very popular by the boys and girls also.
